500 Years of Fashion in Paper Art at SCAD Atlanta

While museum goers have long had the opportunity to view and admire historic textile costumes from around the globe, in Atlanta at the SCAD FASH Museum, the public is invited to an exceptional exhibition of highly detailed sculptures created from mere paper and paint by the Belgian artist, Isabelle de Borchgrave.

In her exhibition, entitled Fashioning Art from Paper, Isabelle presents incredible sculptural replicas of costumes over a 500-year period beginning with the Renaissance and the Medici family shown here.  It is hard to believe that the elaborate lace collars, ruches, pearl necklaces and other finery are all made of paper!

From elaborate period gowns to 20th century couturiers such as Worth and Poiret to this spectacular turquoise gown inspired by Mariano Fortuny– all command awe from the viewers as they move from one breathtaking creation to another.

In the center of the exhibition, SCAD installers created a ring of exotic and colorful hanging costumes created by the artist from her “Les Ballet Russes” series interpreting costumes designed by Leon Bakst, Giorgio de Chirico and Pablo Picasso.

Over her 40-year career, Isabelle’s works have been exhibited internationally, including Belgium, China, England, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, and the USA, and can be seen in museums throughout the world.  Her latest creations were inspired by her visit to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in 1994.  Paper costumes and tromp l’oeil became the focus of her collections which have achieved worldwide recognition and made her an international name and reputation associated with fashion and paper.

Kudos to the artist and co-organizers, SCAD FASH, Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Society of the Four Arts, Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Frick Art and Historical Center, Baker Museum and Flint Institute of Arts for a spectacular take on fashion made of paper!

The exhibition is located at the SCAD Fashion Museum in Atlanta and will run through January 12, 2020.  So, if you are in Atlanta during that time, be sure to stop by.  Our Collectors for Connoisseurship (C4C) group considered it a highlight of our recent C4C Arts Weekend in Atlanta and Savannah from Nov 7-11.

Shannon Robinson is the curator and chairperson of the biannual exhibition Windows to the Divine and the annual Collectors for Connoisseurship Arts Weekends (Nov 7-11, 2019 Atlanta & Savannah).

Xeus, Vincent

About Vincent Xeus

Vincent Xeus is an award-winning artist and a leading figure in the international contemporary art scene. He creates from his personal cultural experiences in a kaleidoscopic sprawl of contemporary imagery and cultural touchstones. As a quintessential Asian American artist in the age of globalization, Xeus straddles both Eastern and Western artistic ideologies, representing their cultural distinctions, blurring boundaries, and creating a unique expression of harmony. Each element in the pictorial structure expresses multiple messages and identities. With a wide range of perspectives, Xeus’s works explore the terms and stakes of individuals in a society, highlighting a sense of belonging and responsibility for the world we share. His prodigious artistic output has earned him international acclaim, and his work is exhibited in renowned public and private collections in museums and galleries worldwide.

Xeus currently lives and creates in Manhattan and Napa Valley, California. He served as Board Director of Arts Council Napa Valley and Arts Commissioner in Napa Valley, California. The artist holds a high honors bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA with Columbia Fellow Award from Columbia University.

About Women of Kennedy Exhibition

Better Angels is a touring solo exhibition consisting of 20 large-format oil paintings, which explore the underrepresented but critical voices and international impact of leaders in the legendary American family, Rose, Ethel, Eunice, Jean, Jackie, Caroline, Rosemary and Kathleen (“Kick”) Kennedy.

The body of work takes inspiration from these women whose rejection of the cultural limitations imposed on their gender and adherence to a universal belief in human dignity has left a global impact. By referencing rarely seen historical and family photos (courtesy of the Kennedy family’s private collection), each painting will re-animate key moments to provide a candid glimpse of each
subject’s life. Whether it was Jean’s role in negotiating peace for war-torn Ireland, Ethel’s international activism for human rights, Eunice’s movement to foster acceptance and inclusion of all disabled persons, or Kick’s uncompromising determination and lust for life – all discovered and followed a bold calling. Through intellect, courage, passion, and personal sacrifices, each took action and played a critical role in establishing new cultural norms.

As Vincent Xeus blurs image over image, abstract and representational foreground and background constantly shift roles, creating spatial ambiguities that resonate as a complex juxtaposition of senses. This series of paintings presents the viewer with an intimate composition overflowing with vitality and authenticity. They raise questions about hegemonic ideals, hope to vividly remind the audience of peace, unity, and innovation brought forth by these characters to the world, and evoke the power of beauty in bridging ideological gaps and healing psychological wounds.
