Ron Gerbrandt

Originally from CA, Ron Gerbrandt grew up in Colorado. With a strong desire to create, he began drawing as a boy and taught himself mural painting in his early teens. He received his degree in Architectural Engineering from University of Colorado, Boulder in 1985 and continued graduate film studies in California. He started businesses and had careers in graphic design, magazine and book publishing as well as clothing design. Shifting back to his first love, he taught himself oil painting and portraiture by the study of British contemporary figurative artists Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon. His large figurative paintings were featured in a couple of recent Art Of The State exhibits at the Arvada Center for the Arts in Arvada, CO and the Fresh Paint Biennial at the Manifest Research Gallery in Cincinnati, OH as well as published in the Manifest International Painting Annual. He has a number of solo and group exhibits throughout Colorado and the West, in addition to large-scale murals and monumental public artwork in Colorado.

Gerbrandt grew up in a Mennonite family with a strong faith heritage and deep agricultural roots. He recently shifted his painting to feature large-scale landscapes reflecting man tending nature – an exploration of place and the memory of working the land. He currently paints from his studio, a 2-room schoolhouse originally built in 1893, located in Brighton, CO in the heart of a small farming community on the Eastern plains.

Marin Dobson is an artist whose trademark oil paintings are infused with a luminous color quality and a focus on lyrical forms. Her paintings incorporate the bold use of color, a variety of textures, lost and found edges, control of values and strong compositions. Marin has won awards and national recognition for her distinctive oil paintings. Her paintings have been juried into many national and international shows including American Women Artists, Oil Painters of America, Salon International, Society of Master Impressionist Painters, and Audubon Artists of America. Desmond O’Hagan

O’Hagan was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, and was raised in the United States.  He enjoys working in several media, but his primary focus is pastels and oils.  Constantly challenging himself has translated into a fulfilling career in fine art encompassing several one-man shows and participation in group exhibitions in the United States, Japan, China, Canada, and France.

O’Hagan has achieved “Eminent Pastelist” status with the International Association of Pastel Societies and is a member of their “Masters Circle.”  He is also a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America and is listed in Who’s Who in American Art. O’Hagan has won several awards in national and international exhibits including IAPS convention exhibit’s Prix’d Pastel Award and “Southwest Art” magazine’s Award of Excellence (twice) at the “Windows to the Divine” Exhibitions in Denver, CO.  He has also won the George Innes, Jr. Memorial Award from the Salmagundi Club in New York City.

His paintings have been the subject of feature articles in numerous national and international magazines including American Art Collector, Southwest Art, The Artist Magazine, International Artist, American Artist, United Airlines’ Hemispheres magazine, Artists and Illustrators (England), International Artist (Australia), and Gekkan Bijyutsu (Japan).

Ron Zito

In my work in contemporary realism I try to capture the meaning of the Latin phrase, finitum capax infiniti, “the finite is capable of the infinite,” which means that there is no access to the infinite except through the finite. It is an apt description of how I feel about our connection to the material world.

In some respects, I have become a chronicler of empty spaces. I don’t believe that a place ever loses its human presence. People live, die, or move on, but their spirit remains. We leave something of ourselves behind in the spaces we inhabit, either in the physical changes we make, or because of the dings and dents of time. Therefore, in a sense, there are no real empty spaces.

Presently, my quest is to try to capture this in two-dimensional form, and the technique of glazing in oil paint seems to suit the subject matter and my temperament. This slow layering of color seems to correspond to the patina of living that inexorably descends upon a particular place. Glazing is a painting method that allows me time for careful thought and introspection.

Compositionally, the way material things have been left behind is of key importance to me. The way a piece of furniture sits in a room, the way an empty shelf protrudes from a wall, these things bear testimony to the people who have moved on. The mute objects are not really silent.

I have taken a circuitous route to art. I grew up around artistic uncles, aunts, and cousins in the New York/New Jersey area. My high school art teacher, Lawrence Schroth, was a wonderful teacher and artist and an encouraging mentor. Traveling out west to Flagstaff, Arizona I majored in commercial art, but soon switched to the study of English and history. With the gentle encouragement of my wife I finally found my way back to drawing and painting after a fifteen-year hiatus.

At first, I was attracted to the color and directness of pastels, and I immediately took to the medium. After my initial exposure to pastels with Tony Ortega at the Art Students League of Denver, I took workshops with Bruce Gomez, Molly Davis, and Mark Nelson. Now painting in oil, I concentrate on interior scenes and more symbolic urban and rural landscapes.

Currently, my work can be viewed at Whitney-Evans Limited (www.whitneyevansltd.com) in the Denver Design District at 595 S. Broadway. Also, please visit me at my working studio in the Bella Building at 3950 Wynkoop St. #2E in Denver’s RiNo district, but please call ahead.

For a good explanation of my artistic thought process, please read this interview in The Denver Dart:
