An exhibition of oil paintings by Elizabeth Wonnacott is on display in Gallery II of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) March 29 through May 29. The artist uses patterns of light and shadows to emphasize what is beautiful and visually intriguing. In this series of contemporary paintings, her use of saturated and unexpected combinations of colors is a key factor in her creative expression.

“Subject matter to me is a vehicle for me to explore how I observe life. My urban influences are an assembly of varied fabrics stitched together to form a tapestry. It is not to resemble a literal story of what it is; moreover, it is a quilt that explains my visual expression. What I find particularly interesting in human intervention in nature is how we are still intertwined with it. Roads, buildings, and farmlands bend with the natural curves of mountains, hills, and streams. City nights are lit up like lightning bugs with an array of colors and patterns. I want to push the viewer past the humdrum of everyday observation into a world of visual tapestry.” –Kevin Weckbach

Fraser Valley Library artist Kent Van Meter returns

Artist Kent Van Meter will be displaying his paintings at the Fraser Valley Library July 15 to Aug. 15 in the Urban Community Meeting room. Van Meter’s art is of the plein aire technique with many of his paintings concentrating on the Fraser Valley and the Colorado Rockies.

Van Meter is a retired American Airlines pilot, a graduate of S.M.U. and a former Air Force pilot. He and his wife Carol have been visiting this area since 1979, and became part-time residents in 1982. In 1992, Carol signed Kent up for a watercolor painting class with local artist Karen Vance. In 2006, Van Meter began painting with oils.
